Obituary of Jamal Braswell
Jamal Braswell was born February 12, 1972 to Hattie Ann Braswell and McCoy Maxy Willis and
Stepfather Robert Gilchrist (Pop Gill). He was the last of six children. Jamal departed this earthly life on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 and was preceded in death by his mother, father and stepfather.
Jamal was born and raised in Newark, NJ where he received his education. He attended Harriet
Tubman Elementary School and graduated from Barringer High School. Jamal began to work for the City of Newark as a Water Safety Instructor, Smith’s General Construction, New Jersey Lawyer Service, WB Mason and Brantley Bros. Moving and Storage.
Jamal married Liza Braswell in 1998 and had five children: Jazmine, Shanae, Zhae, Jamal and Joshua.
Jamal was a sports fanatic. He enjoyed playing basketball, swimming, watching sports, playing
video games, grilling (known as the Grill Master) for family and friends. He loved music,
working out and traveling.
Jamal leaves to cherish precious memories his wife, Liza Braswell; three daughters; Jazmine
Smith, Shanae Braswell and Zhae Braswell; two sons; Jamal Braswell and Joshua Braswell. Four
brothers; Lonnie Braswell and wife Sheryl, Michael Braswell and wife Vicki, Joey Braswell and
wife Rita, and Darnell Braswell; one sister Chiffon Braswell; three grandchildren; Fayth Gaynor,
Kayden and Kinsley Butler. As well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and
friends.
