While reading a particular article on the internet, I read the article concerning Dr. Nelson, your beloved family member who is not with the Lord. Even though I live in Colorado, I hope the school where he was principal will be renamed after him. As you grieve the loss of your loved one, I pray you will take comfort in the words of Saint Paul: "...To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." 2Cor. 5:8. May the love of God and the peace of the Holy Spirit be with you.

Derrick’s family: I'm so sorry for your loss. I went through a similar situation and I was very helped by the hope that I found in the Bible in John 5:28, which says, "Do not amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I am sending you a link with more information on this hope.

I didn't have the great honor of meeting you. I know many people did. I just read your story tonight that has consumed me in every way. I hurt so bad for your family, son, fiancé, colleagues and any other person that have had the pleasure of meeting you. My sister saved my life with a bone marrow transplant just a short year and 176 days ago. You sir, are a hero in so many ways and the world will shine a little less bright without you.
Don’t get on Facebook that much, but my sister that saved my life shared an article about you. I don’t think any article can replace what the world is missing without you in it. God has gain another angel. I’ll continue to keep your family in my prayers. The world would be a great place if we all lived by your example.
My Facebook post is below for the family and all his loved one. I can’t imagine how you feel. God bless you all.
As many of you know, my sister Olivia saved my life. You have less than a 20% chance of a sibling being your match for a bone marrow/stem cell transplant. This gentleman, Derrick Nelson, has protected our freedom, mentored our youth and saved a stranger’s life. Would you do that? Do you have the strength to save a stranger’s life? God bless his family, friends and community that will miss his presences daily. He obviously was the definition of what we should all strive to be. #BeTheMatch #BeKind #DerrickNelson

Derrick,
My friend, it was too many years since we saw each other in person, but thanks to Facebook we had the chance to see our lives grow. We grew our families, our careers, and ourselves. My thoughts are with your parents, fiance, and daughter right now, in addition to all of those around you that you have made an impact on. I have no doubt that your legacy will live on through all those you touched over the years. Godspeed my friend.

Extending my heartfelt sympathies to Dr. Nelson's family, students and friends.
I just read his story and felt compelled to offer a few words of comfort to anyone that had the honor and privilege of knowing him.
Honor this amazing man by doing a good deed for a stranger, flash a smile to a lonely soul or give of your time to help someone in need.
I am truly saddened by his passing, this world needs more Dr. Nelson's!
May God Bless and comfort his family.

I didn't have the honor of directly knowing Dr. Nelson but my heart was crushed when I saw the news report. I am the recipient of donated bone cells which definitely saved my life. To hear that Derrick died to help another who needed his cells brings tears to my heart - such sadness for his family and friends and students. But also I have such tremendous admiration for his willingness to step up in so many ways and wanted to let his family know that his larger legacy has spanned across the nation and into so many hearts. I salute you Dr. Nelson.

I served with Chief Nelson in the US Army Reserves for two years. He was an honorable man with impeccable integrity. My prayers go out to his family. Godspeed Chief. You’ll be missed.
