Obituary of Josephine Richardson

Josephine Richardson, affectionately known as JoJo, Momma Jo, Josie and Red, was born December 11, 1954 in Newark, NJ to the late Vashti and Nathaniel Richardson.  She departed this life on May 3, 2021.

Josephine was educated in the Newark School System where she attended Quitman Street School and West Kinney Junior High School.  As a proud “Indian” she graduated a year early from Weequahic High School in 1972.  She also attended Essex County College, New Jersey City University and Union County College.  She was employed by General Electric and soon after The City of Newark where she served in various capacities and retired as a Vocational Counselor for NewarkWorks after 30 years of service.

She joined Clear View Baptist Church alongside her two children and was a member of the Mass, Inspirational and Celestial Choirs.  She served many years as Mass Choir President and is largely remembered for her organizational and planning skills.  She also enjoyed attending Sunday School which sparked her daily Scriptures and inspirational posts on Facebook.

Josephine was a very fun, loving and nurturing person.  She was a mother to many and shared so much love, laughter and wisdom with those around her.  Whether it was her children, grandchildren, a co-worker or a client, she made sure to give you the tough love you needed and most times a warm hug.

She had a great sense of humor, she loved to dance and was often known as the life of the party.  She enjoyed traveling and spending time with family.  

She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved children: Chaun (Dionne) Richardson (Albany, NY) and Sheronda Richardson (Newark, NJ); two grandchildren whom she proudly adored: Jonathan and Cristiane Richardson; five sisters, Christine (Thomas) Williams (Pittsburgh, PA); Mary Richardson Mosby and Joyce Richardson (Chicago, IL); Francine and Kathleen Richardson (Newark, NJ); three brothers, Johnny and Tyrone Richardson (Newark, NJ), James (Lynda) Richardson (Maxton, NC); four siblings preceded her in death: Paul, Lenara, Beverly and Anthony Richardson.  One goddaughter Jovanna Brown (Atlanta, GA) and godson, the late Jerrard Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends both near and far.
