My deepest condolences to the family of Doug Rowe, I was blessed to be in an Honors Electronics class at Brooklyn Tech that included Lanny, Craig, Rafael, Leroy and of Course Doug.
Looking back it’s funny because I remember Doug as being the quiet one in the class with the all knowing smile while chaos was breaking out.
As you know Doug was one of the 3 Bell Lab Scholars from that class. A story I’ve told many times.
Several years ago when I was working in the City, I used to see Doug at Penn Station. We stopped, talked, exchanged numbers and went to lunch. We had some good talks and he was proud of his family,
I was very saddened to hear of his passing and your loss.
May the Grace of GOD surround you and be with you during this time and the precious days ahead.

Doug and I have been friends since the time we attended the same high school and college. Doug could always make you laugh or raise an eyebrow with his commentary and observations. In college Doug was one of four engineering students (Sam Scipio, Lanny Smoot, and I were the other three) at Columbia University that hung out together and gave each other support to make it through. Doug and I were in most of the same classes in college and I got to witness firsthand the intelligence and deeper reflection behind the big smile and jovial disposition. As the years have gone by, I always considered the times the four of us spent together as some of the most important in my life. I will always consider these men as my friends. The attached photos of the four of us were taken at my 60th birthday party in 2015. The world will not be the same without Doug in it, but I will also cherish the memories we shared.

Doug, Craig Thompson, and I (Lanny Smoot) were blessed to receive Bell Labs Scholarships to Columbia University Engineering. Doug and I also matriculated before this, from Brooklyn Tech, but I didn't really know him then. When I arrived at Columbia I felt very much alone, being one of the very few Black students in engineering at that time. Soon I met Doug (and later caught up with Gary Foster and Craig Thompson (who also went to Tech), and later... Sam Scipio. Suddenly, I had a supportive family, who were definitely one for all and all for one. Doug and I wound up with adjacent rooms on campus for two years in a row (wonderfully provided by our scholarships). We were good friends, but we DID compete on music (loudly!) The jury is still out, but we had a perpetual argument over Temptations vs. Spinners, which group is better?! I still say Temptations, but sadly I'll have to wait a while before we can continue the argument.... Columbia is a demanding school and I remember days spent over at "McIntosh" the student lounge where you could snack, hang out, study, or just shoot the "sh*t". I remember those times as some of the best in my life. Doug and I moved on to careers, Electrical Engineering for me, Computer Science for Doug, but we both worked summers during the Columbia years, at Bell Labs (again, part of our Scholarships). I've attached a photo which was on the front page of the Bell Labs news as we were about to start our careers at Bell. Doug was a great friend and I am so sorry that he has left us too soon.
