Obituary of Roy Allen Dixon
Roy Allen Dixon was born October 24, 1945, to the late Molian L. Dixon, Sr., and Zeola Dixon in Sweetwater, AL. He matriculated in the Marengo County public school system. He began his Christian journey at Independence Missionary Baptist Church in Sweetwater, AL. He later relocated to Newark, NJ, where he pursued and achieved his Associate’s Degree in Business Administration at Essex County College.
In 1967, he attended Beulah Baptist Church and in that same year, he married Martha D. Armwood. His spiritual journey led them to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Newark, NJ, in 1968. While attending, two children were born of this union. Later in June 1984, Roy married Janice Ford and to that union, one daughter was born.
During his membership at Pleasant Grove Baptist church, he faithfully served as a Trustee, Usher, sang in the Male Chorus, and even drove the church van.
Taking after the guidance of his grandfather, Columbus, the value of being a hard worker was instilled in Roy. He worked various jobs such as Twin County Grocer, New Jersey Transit, and Federal Express Ground to name a few. He also served his country by being drafted into the United States Army in 1969. He served from 1969 to 1972 during the Vietnam War and then was later honorably discharged.
Roy had a love for taking pictures that lasted throughout his lifetime. He had a keen eye for capturing special moments. He would often take pictures of events and submit the photos to the newspaper. He also loved and collected Jet and Ebony magazines as well as being an avid reader of the Newark Star Ledger. He was a fierce bowler and participated with several leagues within the church and work. He was a truly dedicated fan of the Washington Redskins — even attending a Giants game and being the only one in the crowd representing his beloved Redskins.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents; three siblings, Molian L. Dixon, Jr., Ozzie Williams, Sr., and Pearline Williams; one sister-in-law, Eva Mae Lockett-Dixon of Kalamazoo, MI.
He leaves many celebrators of his life and legacy: one sister, Mary Louise Williams of St. Louis, MO; three beautiful daughters, Kassandra of Goldsboro, NC, O. Rosalind of White Hall, PA, and Maquentta of Linden, NJ; he also leaves his pride and joy — his grandsons, Justin of White Hall, PA, and Malachi of Linden, NJ; he leaves behind one niece, Theresa Williams of Newark, NJ; four nephews, Harold Williams of Sweetwater, AL, Ozzie Williams, Jr., (Sharon) of South Orange, NJ, Derrick Williams (Uraina) of Lansdale, PA, and Demetrious Williams of Newark, NJ; as well as five great-nieces and nephews, Jeremiah, Shawna, Theress, Shayla and Ozzie Williams III.
Roy also leaves to cherish his memory: one sister-in-law, Adadell Williams of Newark, NJ; beloved friends, Thomas Simon of Ft. Worth, TX, Johnny Paul White of Irvington, NJ, Herman and Julie Williams of Union, NJ, and Doris Ankrah of East Orange, NJ; and one endearing friend, Patricia Chambers of Newark, NJ. He has a host of close friends and family including Warren (Carolyn) Dixon, Sr.
Roy was a fighter to the end and stuck his sword in the sand of eternity on April 26, 2022.
